She looks up at me then. Really looks. And I feel it like a punch to the chest. “How’s your knee after the ride?”
“Wish it hurt,” I say, and it comes out before I can think better of it.
She tilts her head, amused. “Why?”
“Might’ve given me an excuse to come inside.”
Her lips twitch into something almost like a smile. “That’d be a bad idea, wouldn’t it?”
“Catastrophic,” I say, stepping closer. “We work together. I’m the captain. You’re the physio. The team’s never had players dating coaching staff. Boundaries and all that.”
“Right,” she murmurs. “Boundaries.”
But she doesn’t step back.
The air between us shifts. Closer. Tighter. Her hand is still on the gate, mine jammed in my coat pocket, like if I don’t move it, I won’t do something stupid.
She glances up at me, voice low and dry. “Just hypothetically . . . how would that even work?”
I raise a brow. “You want logistics?”
“Sure. Let’s plan our mutual career downfall in advance.”
I smile, slowly. “Disaster scenario: we give in. One kiss turns into something more. The tabloids catch wind, the club implodes, Tom has a stroke, Tyler gets the armband.”
