I screamed, then screamed again as I was grabbed around the waist and lifted off my feet to be carried back into the stairwell. I was jostled about, but with the man’s thick arms wrapped around me, I felt protected. A strange thing to think of in the midst of chaos.

My ears rang from the sound of the gunshots. The heavy door slammed shut behind us. I was put down, then he spun me around.

The guy leaned down, so we were eye to eye, his hands resting on my shoulders. His hair was dark, pulled back in a stubby ponytail. Some tendrils had come free that hung to his chin. I’d never thought a guy with longer hair was hot or manly, but I’d been wrong. So very, very wrong. This man checked all of my boxes. Gorgeous. Big. Big enough to press me into a mattress and feel safe and feminine. Rough and rugged, completely opposite of the pale, stuffed shirts I worked with in the accounting office.

Daring. Bold. And right now, my protector. His eyes blazed bright green. When I’d checked him out in his hotel room, they’d been a deep brown. Chocolate. Now… so different. My mind was so frazzled I was probably crazy. No, almost dying did that.

Holy shit, someone shot at us! The men were definitely after me if they’d been waiting at my car.

“Are you okay?” His voice was a deep growl. Lower than earlier although maybe he was freaking out, too. His gaze raked over me. He was breathing hard, his lips parted. Full lips I suddenly wanted to kiss. Was it adrenaline? Was it my dry spell with men? Or was it him?

I nodded, my mouth too dry for words to come out. Then I saw it: the way the flannel clung to his right arm. The growing dark stain.

“Oh my God, you were shot!” My panic, already at full throttle, went hotter.

He shrugged. Shrugged! “It’s just a scratch. Wait here.”

Reaching the restaurant finally, Dane pulled into the dirt lot next to it. He had to agree with Arne, none of them smelled too fresh. He walked into the small diner.

  “I need to wash up. Order me a—” Dane found that all of his capacity to form logical thoughts had fled his brain. He stood numbly in the middle of the door, staring at her, his first childhood crush.

Tani Johnston stood at one of the tables laughing with the customers while she took their order. She was just as stunning as he remembered her with her long black hair and caramel-colored eyes. As if in slow motion, she looked up at him, her smile lighting up her whole face.

“Dane Ulvmand? That can’t be you, you’re all grown up. Hey, Arne. Is this giant Erik?” she walked over to them as Dane stood frozen in place.

      “Hey, Tani,” Arne answered, jabbing an elbow in Dane’s ribs. “I heard you had moved back to town. Didn’t I mention it?” he said with a smirk at Dane.

“No, Arne. You didn’t.” Dane shook his head, clearing his brain so he could speak. It was probably more of a grunt, but whatever.

“You still drink Coke, Dane?” she asked.

“Hmm,” he answered, nodding his head. Okay, that was also a grunt. He would have to do something to gain control of his vocabulary so he didn’t continue to sound like an idiot around her. “Yes. Grab a table,” he said to Arne before turning toward the restroom.

Once he was locked inside, he wanted to bang his head against the mirror until it broke. This was Arne’s fault. He should bang his brother’s head against the mirror. How could he not warn him that Tani was back in town? Jackass.

Tani had been that perfect girl when Dane was growing up. She was in Roar’s class in school, but Dane had a crush on her his entire junior high school career.”

Tani was one of those girls who was not only beautiful, but kind. She was a cheerleader, homecoming queen, basketball player, prom queen, academic decathlete, FFA queen, top of her class, and even more queen titles. But she was never the typical stuck-up that came with it. Tani was nice to everyone, including a freakishly large junior high kid.

Dane couldn’t even count the number of times he had raced from the junior high to the diner just so Tani would bring him a Coke. He would grin stupidly at her until Roar finally tracked him down, ripping him out of the diner to go home.

Twelve years later, he shouldn’t still be struck dumb seeing her, yet here he was.

Marking Madi may have cured my madness but didn’t magically solve anything for her.

“You can have your job back.” I promise it knowing I’m fucking myself. Knowing it can’t possibly work. The moon madness has worn off, but the sense of being split in two still rides me. Things are still on a knife’s edge with maintaining my leadership of the pack.

She’s too smart, though. Her narrowed gaze tells me she also knows it won’t work.

I grasp for another straw, going for her kink. “I will make your life a living hell, little girl. You won’t be able to keep up with my demands.”

This earns me a faint smile. “You kind of lost your teeth when you revealed that you need my pussy to survive.” 

I growl at the mention of that particularly delectable anatomy. “Oh, I still have teeth.” I suspect my eyes glimmer with my wolf. 

Madi’s body revs back to life. Her pupils dilate, cheeks flush, and I smell the sweet scent of her arousal.

I stand and reach out a hand for her. “I guess I’m going to have to show you that I’m still the boss.”

She takes my hand, but instead of lifting her to her feet, I pull her up and over my shoulder and walk with her to the back of the plane where there’s a fully-enclosed sleep pod. Madi laughs and kicks her legs.

I slap her ass hard enough to get her attention.

She shrieks.

I open the pod and drop her on the neatly-made bed. “Let me show you what happens when you disobey the Big Bad Boss.”
