TOUR - CONTEMPORARY - THE SPRING IN MY HEART (Love for All Seasons, #4) by J.L. Lora

Lux and Oliver navigate the delicate balance of trust and vulnerability. Just when it seems they’re overcoming their complicated history, their exes lurk in the shadows, forcing them back to square one.

The Spring in My Heart
Love for All Seasons, #4
by J.L. Lora

EXCERPT

Mierda mano, when I think shit can’t get any worse, it can. I have to face my one-night stand from Noche Buena.

The one I relive at least four to five times a day.

The one where I got left behind so she could run back to her ex.

The one that has me playing Aventura on a loop.

And it starts with her brother, my friend.

Coño

I pull out the wet wipes I always carry around and swipe the back of my neck, over my arms, and under my pits. I reapply deodorant and throw on the clean Henley I keep in my trunk for emergencies. I blow a breath into my palm and instinctively reach for the mouthwash in the glove compartment.

I need to put the long morning at work behind me—the fight with Lyssa, my girlfriend, over our canceled weekend trip, and my former mother-in-law’s attitude because Ayla wants me, not her, to take her to the mall this weekend. Now, my day is turning into a latrine, but I need to make it look like it smells like roses.

Because Luciana Blake didn’t cancel the appointment for a walkthrough of her reno project like I’ve been praying she would.

I got a text from my friend Cam confirming his sister would meet me at two in front of the side-by-side properties she is looking to unite. My boy actually sounded happy, excited, hopeful…all the things he wouldn’t be if he knew what happened the last time I saw Luciana.

We slept together.

And by slept, I mean nos comimos. Yeah, we ate each other up, rolled on the hardwood floor of my flip, and rode each other to exhaustion. Her scent clung to my nostrils for days. No matter how many times I bathed, I could still smell her on my skin. No matter what I ate or drank, I still tasted her tongue on mine.

Now Cam wants me to work with her and renovate her house like I don’t wake up in cold sweats thinking about how well she fits in my arms. I would have to see her every day, look into her eyes, and remember how she held my hand as we traded stories from our pasts.

And relive how she ran back to New York, Mateo de la Cruz, and a life of parties, press, and riches. All that is the polar opposite of my world as a contractor, coach, and single dad.

When I tried to tell him I’m too busy, too booked, he hit me with, “Please make a space for her. Chase and I wouldn’t trust anyone else.”

Me lleva el diablo.

So I couldn’t say no after that, not when I fully understand what it means to be protective of someone. Anyway, it will just be business with her. I can use the money to pad my savings, which is always a good thing. My negrita—my daughter, my life, my Ayla—wants more things as she grows up, and I’m determined to give them to her. She will never not have something because I don’t have the means to provide them for her.

There’s also no way I can say no without raising more questions from Cam or Chase of why I won’t work on their sister’s project.

Besides, if Lux has no problem with us, I won’t be the one acting despechado over what happened between us. We did what we set out to do on Noche Buena. We gave each other an unforgettable night. Now, she’s back with her famous ex, and I’m in a stable—kinda—relationship.

It’s all good. Really good. Fantastic, really.

I finish freshening up and head to her house in Federal Hill, arriving thirty minutes ahead of our meeting. I barely remember driving up the steep hill lined with red brick rowhomes on Christmas morning when I brought her home. That day, I concentrated on the road ahead, the fallen snow, and the hole she carved in my chest. I ignored the park and, through the snow-covered trees, the view of the Inner Harbor. She has a picturesque view from her front windows and her rooftop. How many times have I seen this on magazine covers and photos on the internet?

This area is like Lux herself—something I watch from afar but never really reach. She is high-class and luxury. My beginnings are so low that humble looks down its nose at them. Every time I step into the shower spray, I thank God for running water inside my house. She’ll never know what the opposite of that is. Just like she has siblings that love and care for her to the point of buying her a property and ensuring a trusted person to work on her renovations. Mis hermanos wouldn’t spit on me if I was on fire.

I can’t believe I let myself dream of the possibility. I shake the thought off and turn my head to what’s at hand, like I’ve been doing for the past two months.

I examine the perimeter, walking around the leading property and then the one I’ll be annexing to it. Both are a good size, but I can see why she needs double the space. Baltimore City row homes are famously narrow. Merged, these two will be a perfect-size masterpiece. I can already tell I’ll need to draw permits from the city to merge the water pipelines and the electric panel.

I establish the horizontal width with my measuring tape, then I cross the street and pull out my phone to use the measuring app to get the correct height. I also take several photos and make notes. It will help me with visualizing the annexing point.

The satin-bronze Range Rover pulls up at five till two in front of the property. Through the glass, I can make out the shape of her slick bob. Luciana’s hair, no longer blonde but now a soft brown, is straight today with none of Noche Buena’s bouncy waves. She pulls down the sun visor and applies lip gloss. I love glossy lips on a woman, but it’s the meticulous taps at the corners with her fingertips that get to me.

My heart takes off, pounding away hard against my sternum. She’s wrong for me, like high blood pressure. I rub my chest to thank him for the reminder. This already was all it was meant to be.

I take a breath to steady and brace myself as the door opens. When she steps out of the vehicle, she’s wearing jeans that mold over her hips and that nice, round ass.

I fight against the flutter in my chest because she’s not as beautiful as I remembered her. She looks even more like a flower that bloomed after the winter, from the jade-green top to the sky-high heels.

Heels? I hope she realizes how much walking we’re about to do.

She smooths her hair and looks around but doesn’t see me immediately. I don’t call out to her but let her walk to her door. I want to see her walk. Looking ain’t going to kill me.

At 1:58, I cross the street.

She turns around, and our gazes meet. Her eyes round for a second, and then her gaze slides over me like mine did over hers just minutes ago. “Hi. I didn’t realize you were here already.”

EXCERPT

“You want a Cosmo?” Campbell asked Sadie.

“Actually, I’ll have a cranberry juice, straight up.”

The woman looked up from her pad, questioning her with her eyes.

“Okay,” Campbell said, interrupting the ensuing question from the waitress. “I’ll have a Coors.”

She looked back at Sadie before she left the table.

“So you’re not drinking tonight?”

“Giving it up for Lent.” She folded the tiny cocktail napkin the woman left behind.

“You’re not even Catholic.”

“Yeah, well, that might change, too.”

The music was certainly bluesy that night. Campbell noticed a man in the corner. He was swaying his head, with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. His eyes were closed, feeling the music deep in his soul.

“So, how was your first week? Did it all come back to you?” He rested his elbows on the table. It was all he could do not to reach across and pull a stray hair from the middle of her forehead. But then that would lead to touching her cheek. Then that would lead to bending across the table and kissing her. Something she wouldn’t understand.

“Yeah, pretty much. You see one naked ass, you’ve seen them all.”

He let out a laugh. The woman reappeared with their drinks. Sadie’s was bright red and filled a medium glass. His was a longneck. A frosted mug accompanied it.

“So true.” He poured the cold elixir down his throat. It felt as if it were setting off sparks as it crawled down to his stomach. A great end to a busy day. And now to be sitting across the table with Sadie made it the best.

Sadie began to sway in her chair to the song that was playing. Without giving thought to how she’d react, he stood and pulled her out to the small dance floor. He couldn’t take not being able to touch her any longer. They were going to share it with three other couples. Slow-moving couples. Maybe dirty dancers, if the lights were brighter and he could see better.

She fought at first, shaking her head no. But he insisted, pulling her harder. The song was “These Arms of Mine.” The words couldn’t have been more fitting to how he felt for her. He wrapped his arms around her tight and began to sway. Her body felt so good…so perfect next to his.

She went to say something the same time he moved his head to look at her. She ended up at his cheek. Her lips brushed against it. They stopped for a brief second, a half inch of space between their faces. His eyes focused on her lips. The ones he’d watch getting slathered with lip gloss in the break room that day, longing to be the wand in the tube. Slowly, he leaned in and kissed her. It was second nature. He wasn’t sure whether she closed her eyes. It ended quickly.

Like the song. “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long” came on next, not allowing for any silence in the dance area. Her eyes didn’t leave his for what seemed a whole chorus of Otis belting out the soulful tune.

She moved her head back to his shoulder, laying her cheek flat against it. His body radiated heat from what just happened…from feeling her breast pressed against his chest. How could he get rid of the extra warmth before she sensed the temperature change?

They remained dancing until the song ended and she pulled away. They went back to the table and sat down without saying a word.

“I’ve got to go to the restroom. I’ll be right back.”

He nodded.

TOUR - WOMEN'S FICTION - TO HAVE AND LET GO by Julianne Dove

To Have and Let Go

Amazon* | Goodreads
Release Day July 9th 2024
Women of Boone County, #2

Read an Excerpt

I was out of town a mile or so, and the same distance from home. The water cascaded

down the windshield in sheets. A shiver ripped down my naked, wet arms. I turned off the car’s

air conditioner and ignition. How long would it take for someone to pass by and help? Throw out

a cable, and it magically hooked where it needed and pulled me out?

Oh, cars came. And passed. Nothing that resembled a large truck with a winch or push

bars to give me the slightest nudge I needed. I sighed. More rain poured. Never the patient one, I

got out, locked the car, and began to walk home. How long could it possibly rain, anyway? This

was Texas, not Seattle, Washington.

It actually took only minutes for water to collect in the soles of my shoes as I pondered

the probability and forecast of a monsoon. And less time for the weight of the rain to form

clumps in what used to be my wispy bangs. Even my eyelashes were unable to withstand the

pelting of the rain, and my eyes strained to stay open. I was cold, wet, and looked down to find

that my shirt now clung to my skin like a cheesecloth.

A bright-orange car passed. The water from the tires sprayed mist that covered my entire

body. It was useless to try to do anything about it. I took another step, my feet sloshing with

every motion forward. Bright, appalling brake lights that glowed from the rear bumper lit the

now monochromatic scene before me. My eyes fluttered against the elements and squinted to

figure out what it was doing. Reverse lights blinked, and slowly it backed up to where I dripped

on the side of the road.

The window lowered to halfway, and I peered inside to see a man hunched forward,

speaking in elevated sound. “Need a ride?”

The question was absurd. Of course I needed a ride. The thing was, I didn’t need to be

killed by agreeing to a ride. Crime television taught me lots of things. Not getting in a car with a

stranger was one of them. Albeit, a nice-looking stranger. His smile, when he asked, was the

kind I’d get if he’d just taken my order at Starbucks. Not a leering one like the weirdo who wants

to shove you in his trunk once he’s given you a sniff of chloroform. Still, I couldn’t be sure, so I

declined.

“No thanks. My house is just up the road.”He persisted. Like a gentleman or a serial killer. It was hard to tell when buckets of water

were being poured upon you. “Really, I’m not a creep or anything. It’s pouring. I can give you

ride.”

I got close enough to smell the coconut air freshener.

Again, my lifelong training of female survivor kicked it. For all the naïve girls who just

wanted to get out of the storm. Forge ahead, stay alive. “Nah, I’m good. But thanks for the

offer.”

He hesitated. “Okay, well, I hope where it is you’re going isn’t far.”

I smiled. Water dripped from my chin. “It isn’t. Thanks for stopping.”

He shook his head and waved before moving forward.

I watched as the lights trailed out of sight. I just saved my own life. Or denied myself a

chance not to get a stupid cold. I’d never know.

I walked the rest of what felt like two miles hunched over, covering my chest with my

wet hand, in the pouring rain. Each step thinking the storm would slack off. It didn’t. I passed

houses with their inside lights on, and watched through their windows as people were going

about their time eating, watching television, or one window where a cat was watching me. He

probably was being reminded that’s why he was an inside cat.

A left turn on Miller and two more houses to go. A blister was beginning to form on my

big toe as it took the brunt of the travel, shoved forward in what used to be my favorite brown

flats. I looked down at the stained dark color and wondered whether they’d ever look the same.

When I looked up again, I noticed that bright-orange car. A spoiler on back, shiny hubcaps, and a

black line down the body of it. I looked at the house where it found itself parked in the driveway.

It was my house! What in the world was it doing parked in my driveway? Well, my mother’s

driveway. This killer was persistent and clairvoyant, it seemed.

I went around to the side door and fished for the key from underneath the mat. Mom was

a genius to leave it in the most inconspicuous place. I looked in the window before turning the

lock. Trying to see the man. At this point of being soaked to the bone, I couldn’t imagine I’d be

too tempting to murder. The bigger mystery was what he was doing here.

I shoved open the door and crossed my chest when I felt the air conditioning bite at the

water standing on my arms. Mom never ran the air conditioning. Oh my gosh. The thought

plowed me over. Maybe he was one of those types who found out someone died and he stalkedthe place for a few days, saw no one else lived there, and he moved in. I looked around for

something to defend myself. Nothing. Why was my mom such a minimalist? No iron skillet. No

rolling pin. Had I been able to get my hand in my wet pocket, I may have checked and found

nothing there too. Before I raided the fridge for a jar of pickles to club him with, he appeared in

the doorway.

“You? What…who…”

“I think I should be asking the same thing,” I said, mopping the water that still leaked

from my stringy hair. “Who are you and what are you doing in my house?”

Still with that Forest Gump look, he exclaimed,

“Chelsea! Of course it’s you. I didn’t

recognize you—

” His eyes moved down my body.

I covered my front, realizing I was a peep show in my white tee shirt.

“You look different not in pigtails and braces.”

Lord, my full-on anxiety stage of life. And Mom kept it prominently displayed on our

mantle. She had my 8x10 third-grade picture next to my cap and gown wallet-sized one.

I fidgeted with my hair. Not much better than ponytails at the present moment. “Okay.

But who are you?”

He ran and pulled a kitchen towel from a drawer. Funny he knew which one. How long

had he been squatting here? He handed it to me. “I’m Patrick.” He held out his hand for me to

possibly shake. I looked, still stuck in the moment, and continued to sop water from my skin.

“Okay, well, I’m Patrick.” He shoved his hand back in his jean pocket. “I’m the chef at your

mom’s restaurant.”

“The chef?” Mom had a chef—er, rather the main line cook, Mr. Newton. He’d

sometimes accidentally leave his teeth soaking in a cup by the employee restroom. I guess it

made sense now that he might’ve not lived long after I moved away. Mom did get him a stool to

sit on to help ease his back when he had to stand long hours.

“Yeah, I…well, she hired me about six months ago.” He went and grabbed some paper

towels and began sopping up the water that puddled around me.

“Okay, but why are you in our house?”

He looked up from where he was kneeling. “It’s a long story, actually.”

TOUR - WOMEN'S FICTION - COMING HOME (The Women of Boone County, #1) by Julieann Dove

Coming Home
The Women of Boone County, #1
February 6th 2024
by Julieann Dove

Read An Excerpt

He panted, momentarily stopped, and rested against my held-out hands. His half-closed eyes stared at me. "Why? You know I love you, Abby. And you love me, too. I don't know what happened." He backed up. "Tell me what happened. I know you, Abby, and we were fine. We were falling right back to where we left off. It's never been over for me."

"Ryan, you have to leave. I told you I was sorry."

He put his hands on his hips. His breathing was still hard to catch.

I tried to look away. To disappear. Never had I felt so trapped and in possession of the key to the lock that held me bound.

"I'm leaving. I was never going to stay. Joe is waiting for me." It came out almost a whisper in the quietness of the empty house.

He puffed out his chest. His lust turned to anger. "Fine. Just leave. That's what you do, isn't' it? At least this time I got to see you crawl away. That's how you do it, isn't it? Just leave then."

He stormed out and the screen door banged against the frame. I watched as he ran down the steps to his car. I listened to the engine until there was silence. I walked to the door that remained glung open and shut it. My lips still tingled where he kissed them repeatedly seconds ago. I clutched my arms where he held me with tension. Never had I burned from a man like I did Ryan. Never would I look into anyone else's eyes and see that forever wasn't long enough to be with them. And never would I see him again.

BLURB
Taran Wird, the loudmouth mistress of flame and lightning, didn’t want to attend the formal gathering of the supernatural elite. She did so only to help to unite the supreme beings in attendance in one common goal: protecting Taran’s sister, Celia.

Celia is pregnant with alpha werewolf Aric Connor’s child, the same child prophesized to save the world from uprising evil. Evil wants this child dead before he is born and, more importantly, before he can grow strong enough to stop it.

Taran and her werewolf lover, Gemini, put plans in place to protect Celia. Master Vampire Misha Aleksandr and his clan also swear their allegiance to Celia and vow to keep her from harm. The witches even cast protection spells around the manor to curse anyone with malintent who enters. Nothing was supposed to go wrong, except everything did.

Creatures that shouldn’t exist stalk the grounds and invade the premises, and every curse meant to shield the guests turns against them. No one counted on the powerful being who arrived uninvited. But he’s here, manipulating the magic enclosing the estate to work in his favor.

As body counts rise and allies become enemies, chances are Celia won’t survive the night. But evil never counted on how hard Taran Wird would fight, even at the expense of her life.
